Gore-Booth began writing poetry and plays in her early twenties. Her work was often political and feminist in nature. She was a strong advocate for women's suffrage and for Irish independence. Gore-Booth's work was published in a number of literary magazines, including the Irish Homestead and the Nation.
In 1900, Gore-Booth met W.B. Yeats. The two poets became close friends and confidantes. Yeats had a profound influence on Gore-Booth's work. He encouraged her to write more ambitious and experimental poetry. Gore-Booth's work from this period is often considered to be her best.
In 1913, Gore-Booth and Yeats founded the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. The Abbey Theatre was a major center for the Irish Literary Revival. Gore-Booth was involved in all aspects of the theater's operation, from writing plays to directing actors. She also served as the theater's manager for a number of years.
Gore-Booth continued to write poetry and plays throughout her life. She also became increasingly involved in politics. She was a member of the Irish Republican Army and she fought in the Irish Civil War. Gore-Booth died in 1926 at the age of 56.
