Early Life and Military Service
Joseph Alexander was born in 1920 in San Francisco, California. He was the son of Russian immigrants, and he grew up in poverty. Despite his humble beginnings, Alexander was a bright and ambitious young man. He graduated from high school at the age of 16, and he went on to attend college at the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, and the United States entered World War II. Alexander dropped out of college and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to the USS Solace, a hospital ship that was responsible for treating wounded sailors and marines.
The Attack on the USS Solace
On January 21, 1945, the USS Solace was attacked by two Japanese kamikaze aircraft. The planes crashed into the ship, causing extensive damage and killing dozens of sailors and marines. Alexander was on duty in the operating room when the attack occurred. He immediately began treating the wounded, and he worked tirelessly for hours to save as many lives as possible.
Despite the chaos and danger, Alexander remained calm and focused. He worked with other medical personnel to triage the wounded, and he provided emergency medical treatment. He also helped to comfort and reassure the frightened and injured sailors and marines.
Alexander's actions during the attack on the USS Solace were heroic. He saved countless lives, and he provided comfort and support to those who were suffering. For his bravery and compassion, he was awarded the Silver Star.
Post-War Life
After the war, Alexander returned to the United States and completed his college education. He went on to have a successful career as a physician. He also became an advocate for veterans and for the importance of providing quality medical care to all Americans.
